Year One

Year One

I don’t know why I always get suckered into watching Jack Black’s movies – but there’s just something about the guy… Plus, Michael Cera (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) was also in this film, so I thought maybe it will be a lot different than Tenacious D Pick of Destiny.

Well, it was different but not a lot. Although, there were some funny parts in there done by a good number of the casts and cameos – there was just something missing.

It was like several different comedy sketches stitched together. It didn’t gel… and yet, it was still predictable.

I could hardly keep my eyes on it.

Maybe next time, Jack Black and Michael Cera can do a movie where they don’t have to be dumb and lazy people. It’s just getting a little old.

Funny People

This is not another Sandler movie and surprisingly it’s not the usual Apatow (Knocked Up) movie either.

I love the fact that the only sign of Adam Sandler’s over-the-top antics are only seen at the very beginning of the movie.

What’s really interesting to watch about this movie is the struggle that Sandler’s character has to endure for having a possibly terminal disease and then later on knowing that he’ll never get back the only girl he ever loved.

The movie also lets you in on the story behind the life of stand-up comics and what they do to get to the top or even just be noticed.

Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Superbad) is delightfully un-douche like in this film. He’s ambitious but still has that human quality that tries to help out with the problems that plague his celebrity boss (Sandler.)

If you are expecting the usual antics from the cast, you may be disappointed. But, if you let them show you their other side, this movie will definitely be worth your time.

Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe

Definitely, Maybe

I’ve been a fan of Ryan Reynolds since I started seeing him in Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (which unfortunately, got canceled!) He always has that cool, suave, cute-thing going for him.

I’m extra glad that this movie is NOT Van Wilder or even close. The story is a lot more grounded and believable. I mean, it can happen – you CAN sort of stray away from your one true love and still find it back in the end.

The humor here is mild and natural and Ryan Reynold’s character here, as a single dad, is really interesting. It shows how he can have a healthy relationship with his daughter despite the fact that they’re family can’t ever be together again.

The women in his life are played beautifully by Elizabeth Banks (Zack and Miri Make a Porno), Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers).

It’s a sweet film about looking for love in the wrong places – definitely worth watching!

The Proposal

The Proposal

The Proposal

It’s been awhile since I’ve watched Sandra Bullock on screen. And ever since I saw the trailers of this movie months back, I’ve already been very keen on seeing it.

I thought it was going to be in the same league as What Happens in Vegas, where two people get married and so on… But this was way different and a lot more entertaining. It didn’t have too many silly moments, except for that “singing in the woods” moment. It was bizarre but still oddly entertaining.

The funny parts were actually more subtle and made the story a lot more believable. Not to mention that Ryan Reynolds is just naturally funny and not too bad to look at – this makes it even more watchable.

Definitely a great date movie, if there ever was one.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

I was finally able to watch this on DVD after waiting months after its release in the theaters. I loved every bit of the movie! The characters have matured and so did the mood of the entire film.

I do believe that Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) did brilliantly in this film. He no longer appeared like an extra but a pivotal character in the story. He also showed good acting compared to the previous films in the franchise. He too, matured, much to Draco’s dismay.

And I especially enjoyed the Hermione-Ron-Lavander love triangle. They developed it perfectly. I am also thankful that Ron had a lot of screen time this time which is much more enjoyable to watch than Hermione (as of the last movie.)

It’s also quite a joy to see how they showed the burgeoning romance between Harry and Ginny. It blossomed really well on screen, way better than it did in the book. I would’ve loved to see how it went though in the end of the movie, but alas, it was not to be – possibly, in the next installment, perhaps?

All-in-all, the movie was a great addition to the ever magical world of Harry Potter. It’s getting near the end of the series and in this movie you can almost taste the darkest of hours that is yet to come.
